NEW Fire Safety Law Independent Third Party Certification
With the introduction of the new legislation there is a requirement for fire safety equipment and services to be provided by competent persons.
The Government has issued a series of eleven guides aimed at specific business areas to help employers and owners understand their responsibilities.
Common to the guides is Section 8: Third Party certification schemes for fire protection products and related services are an effective means of providing the fullest possible assurances, offering a level of quality, reliability and safety that non-certified products may lack. .....Third Party quality assurances can offer comfort both as a means of satisfying you that the goods and services you have purchased are fit for purpose, and as a means of demonstrating that you have complied with the law".
It is therefore important to understand what "Third Party" quality assurance schemes offer and how you can ensure the company or person you appoint to carry out fire safety work is competent and can provide you with a certificate of conformity.

Fire Alarm Systems
The nationally recognised quality schemes for fire alarm and fixed gaseous extinguishing systems are BAFE SP201, SP202 and SP203.
SP203 is a modular scheme that provides for certification of the individual modules that comprise a system:
Design
Commissioning
Installation
Maintenance
A company may be approved for just one or up to all four modules so it is important to check that your supplier can provide a Third Party certificate for the type of work you require.
This will give similar guarantees to those associated with the extinguisher scheme detailed above.
| By using a BAFE registered company for these areas of your fire safety work you will be confident that you have used a 'Competent Contractor'. |

| Do you tick the box for fire safety? |
| If you are a specifier or end-user of fire protection products and services then BAFE should be a vital part of your selection process. |
Whatever the use to which a product is put, it is manufactured in accordance with specific standards. In an industry devoted to protecting lives and property from fire, it is quite rightly argued that such product based standards are particularly important.
| However, such standards are only half the story. Of equal importance is a robust method of ensuring that the systems in which those products operate, along with the services employed in installing and maintaining them, are also independently verified. |
| That is where BAFE comes in. |
| The responsible person |
| October 2006 saw the introduction of the most wide ranging changes in fire safety legislation for more than 30 years. The onus is now definitely on the business owner/employer as the person responsible for ensuring effective fire safety. It is up to the responsible person to ensure that the individual or company employed to carry out fire safety work is competent to do so. BAFE offers the means by which such competence can be immediately and effectively demonstrated. The BAFE logo says that what is being specified or bought is competent, effective and reliable. |
| Don't take the risk! |
| Taking a risk with fire protection can have significant and even life-threatening consequences. Make sure you tick the safety box! |
